'Doctor Stranger' staff praise Lee Jong Suk's acting skills

Lee Jong Suk was complimented as an actor who goes above and beyond with his acting skills, willingness to learn, and work ethic by his fellow 'Doctor Stranger' staff.

The drama's writer Park Jin Woo met up with reporters in Nonhyeondong, Gangnam, Seoul on June 26 and spoke highly of Lee Jong Suk, "Lee Jong Suk is a very good actor... Lee Jong Suk is like an actor who is [always] prepared. He even acts out the things that aren't in the script. He studies the things that I didn't write by himself and shows it to me on set... I had no worries. But since actor Lee Jong Suk does so well, I got all the more worried for myself. Because I had to write a script that is fitting enough to lead a good actor... He is a friend who I will continue to look forward to."

PD Jin Hyuk shared, "['Doctor Stranger'] didn't start off with the casting of somewhat established actors, but it was a drama that started because we wanted to make it. We each have our own goals. In the case of Lee Jong Suk, his goal is to hear that he is a good actor... As the director, I thought that I was holding a diamond in the rough. I think that actors will shake [the heart] of South Korea someday."

There are only four episodes of 'Doctor Stranger' left, so tune in every Monday and Tuesday at 10 PM KST!

SBS Drama 'Dr. Stranger' Getting Northern Viewers

A new South Korean television drama that depicts elements of North Korean society is attracting viewers in the North, Daily NK sources inside the country report. The SBS production “Doctor Stranger,” which tells the tale of a South Korean doctor’s life during and after his escape from North Korea, is popular with North Korean university students.
A Pyongyang source reported the news to Daily NK on the 17th, saying, “Some parts, like the bit where surgery is performed on the Suryeong (Kim Il Sung), are just not the reality we know, and we find them odd. But still, many people say it’s a fun show.”
In an early episode of the drama, which went on air in South Korea at the beginning of May, a famous South Korean doctor is brought to North Korea to save the life of Kim Il Sung. Thereafter, neither he nor his son is permitted to leave, however, and it is only following the father’s death that the son finally makes it back to Seoul.
Though the number of North Korean people viewing South Korean media is currently far lower than previously due to the era's ultra repressive atmosphere, it is still possible for some groups, including Party officials and other citizens with social capital, to watch them in secret. Bribery remains a viable means of evading punishment, too.
"The popularity of ‘Stranger’ among university students is not waning," the source went on. "No matter how much they try to step up the crackdowns; there are already many people for whom watching South Korean dramas is part of life. In fact, it is Party officials, their children and students who are driving the popularity."
"Group 109 [which is responsible for controlling "anti-socialist" activities] don’t visit the homes of officials much," she pointed out. "And if students do get caught watching this kind of thing, they can normally get away with a bribe. They just confiscate the CD and tell them not to say where they watched it."
According to inside sources, it is unusual for people in North Korea to buy copied DVDs outright. Instead, they are borrowed for roughly half the purchase price, which in the case of new material is roughly the same price as a kilo of rice in a public market.
Although there are fewer goods entering North Korea today through smuggling, the cross-border flow has not been completely halted. "Smugglers say that they are currently able to bring in less than half the 1000-3000 discs per day that had been the case," the source said. "But that is still not nothing. There is no way they can stop the flow completely because it is Party officials who keep wanting to get hold of them."

HOMEDRAMA STORIES VIEW ARCHIVES 'Dr. Stranger" Lee Jong Suk's Brazen Acting

'Dr. Stranger" Lee Jong Suk's Brazen Acting

SBS Monday/Tuesday drama "Dr. Stranger" Lee Jong Suk's cute comical acting exploded.  The chemistry partners were Choi Jung Woo and Lee Jong Suk as they were the ideal combination adding fun to the drama.
On the 11th episode broadcast on June 9th, Park Hoon (played by Lee Jong Suk) and Moon Hyun Wook (played by Choi Jung Woo) were drunk and were sleeping in the same bed.  Because of this ironic bed scene, they drew laughter from the audience and meanwhile, it was revelaed that Song Jae Hee (played by Jin Se Yeon)'s medical records were released.  Here, Park Hoon told Moon Hyung Wook that you first have to go away, then deny, and then confess, as he made viewers laugh.
Especially as Lee Jong Suk pointed to Moon Hyung Wook and said, "Actually, it's this person who made me do this.  Really, he's horrible" as he betrayed him.  With his experienced funny acting, he perfected the drama.  Such acting between Lee Jong Suk and older actor Choi Jung Woo invoked images of Tom and Jerry.  This stirred up the viewers as the strongest couple with the best chemistry.
In the drama, Lee Jong Suk called Moon Hyung Wook, "master" and his funny way of talk seems like he's talking not as Park Hoon but actually as Lee Jong Suk as his natural acting goes back and forth between charisma and medical comic nature.
In actuality, Lee Jong Suk kept on calling Choi Jung Woo "master" when he was relaxing and made the staff laugh.
Meanwhile, "Dr. Stranger" is about a genius doctor Lee Jong Suk that was born in South Korea but raised in North Korea and his conflict against the most elite doctor of Korea, Park Hae Jin.  The two of them face the greatest conspiracy in a medical drama and fusion drama.  It is broadcast every Monday and Tuesday at 10PM.

Lee Jong Suk Is Becoming An Even Bigger Hallyu Star In China

Lee Jong Suk has become so popular that he is called one of the "Fantastic Four of Hallyu." The other three actors are Kim Soo Hyun, Lee Min Ho and Kim Woo Bin. The actors are so called because of their popularity in other countries, especially China.
Lee's recent dramas, "School 2013," and "I Hear Your Voice" were especially popular in China. Interest in his current drama "Doctor Stranger" was promoted before it began when the drama's producers streamed scenes of the drama's filming on Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter.
So far, the drama has been downloaded 150 million times on Youku and Todou, the Chinese versions of YouTube. Downloads are expected to surpass 600 million by the time the drama ends. The expectations are based on the fact that "I Hear Your Voice" was downloaded 350 million times by its last episode.
Lee Jong Suk has made several trips to China recently. He spent Valentine's Day in Shanghai, singing romantic songs to his fans and reading a handwritten letter, which made him cry. Over 2,000 Chinese fans attended. In March Lee Jong Suk opened his own Weibo account and posted the comment that he was on his way to Beijing. He also uploaded a selfie in which he wore a white shirt and an earring. A mere 30 minutes after opening his account he already had 100,000 followers.
Some of his Chinese fans later joined Korean fans to hire buffet catering for the staff of "Doctor Stranger." Given the success of the medical drama Chinese media is eager to interview the actor and Chinese companies have offered him commercial opportunities.
In "Doctor Stranger," Lee Jong Suk plays a genius doctor from North Korea. After his character flees North Korea along with his childhood love, he loses her and thinks she died. He finds out she is still alive and tries to bring her to South Korea. He begins to work at a hospital to raise the money to find her but then becomes involved in a medical and romantic rivalry with a South Korean doctor played by Park Hae Jin.
Some of the drama's success in China can also be attributed to the popularity of Park Hae Jin, who starred in four Chinese dramas and gained even more popularity when he had a role in another Hallyu hit, "You Who Came From The Stars." In that drama he played a chaebol in love with Jun Ji Hyun.

Lee Jong Suk talks about his new drama Doctor Stranger

Hi, I am Lee Jong Suk who plays Park Hoon in SBS Mon/Tues drama Dr. Stranger.
Q. Tell us about the character, Park Hoon.
I play a genius doctor who was taken to North Korea because of a conspiracy but then comes back to South Korea.
Q. How do you feel about starring in Dr. Stranger?
Honestly, it is pretty hard to play the character. The character changes three times in the first and second episode already, so it was hard to act. The drama’s director helps me a lot to play the character, so now I am shooting the drama diligently. It is hard to act because of the character's occupation, above all. Medical terms are too hard to memorize and pronounce, and there are some difficulties with words and the language because I have to speak in the North Korean dialect and in Seoul cadence.
Q. What do you want to say to viewers?
We are very near the premiere now. I am shooting the drama hard so please love the drama. I will do my best to show good acting skills.

HANGUL LYRICS

It’s your smiley face
이젠 니가없이 내가 살수없잖아
(let’s go)
힘들었던 기억은 이젠 모두 지워버려
눈물났던 날들을 baby, you can wipe the memory

슬퍼했던 날들도 baby, you don’t need it anymore.
I can’t stop my love for you forever. x2
니가 내가 너를 얼마나 사랑한다는걸 아는지
니가 바라보는 그녀가 내가 아니란걸 알지만 내가 그녀가 아니지만
baby I will find a way.
Although we sing two melodies in the same place right now
I know we will find a way somewhere we belong.
(let’s go)
힘들었던 기억은 이젠 모두 지워버려
눈물났던 날들을 baby, you can wipe the memory
니가내가 있을땐 이젠 모두 변할꺼야
슬퍼했던 날들도 baby, you don’t need it anymore.

TRANSLATION LYRICS

When you hold me in your arms
I learned about warmth
When you watched over my eyes
I realized that I was precious
When you came to me
I was shaking
When you said those words
I knew that I was a woman
Burying into me
It’s your smiley face
Now you’re not here
And I can’t live
(Let’s go)
Erase all of the bad memories
The tearful days
Baby, you can wipe the memory
When you and I are here
Everything will change now
The sad days
Baby, you don’t need it anymore
I can’t stop my love
For you forever (x2)
Do you know how much I love you?
I know the girl you’re looking at is not me
I’m not her but baby I will find a way
Although we sing two melodies
In the same place right now
I know we will find a way
Somewhere we belong
(Let’s go)
Erase all of the bad memories
The tearful days
Baby, you can wipe the memory
When you and I are here
Everything will change now
The sad days
Baby, you don’t need it anymore
