Korean celebrities remember Sewol ferry tragedy and victims

A number of celebrities mourned for the Sewol ferry incident and victims.

April 16 is the first anniversary of the tragic disaster. The sinking of the ferry occurred on the morning of April 16 last year, while it was en route from Incheon to Jeju. The Japanese-built South Korean ferry capsized while carrying 476 people, mostly secondary school students from Danwon High School in Ansan. As a result, 304 passengers died in the disaster and approximately 172 survivors were rescued, by private fishing boats and other commercial vessels ironically, instead of South Korean coast guard or ROK Navy ships. 9 are still missing.

Many celebrities put up a photo or image of a yellow ribbon as their profile picture of online or mobile messengers, SNS channels, etc. The yellow ribbon represents sorrow over the tragic incident. Some stars also posted a commemorating message on their SNS.

• Entertainment shows cancelled

Korea’s terrestrial TV channels cancelled entertainment shows to express their condolences for the victims of the Sewol tragedy. Also, M.net’s ‘M Countdown’ shifted its air date to Friday. ‘The Lover’ will not air tonight.

The star-studded cast and director of the upcoming blockbuster, ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’ are said to arrive in Seoul today on the quiet, without any special event to join in mourning the loss of the incident.

Moreover, seasoned actor Lee Kyung-young and singer Jo Kwanwoo released a music video entitled ‘Floating Lamp’ to commemorate the deceased. The music video has become in the center of attention upon the release as it was produced by Lee Kyung-young. ‘Floating Lamp’ was made by many celebrities and artists in Korea as a talent donation. The video features South Korean contemporary dancer Poppin’ Hyun Joon’s dance of condolence.
